Vancouver, BC [map]
Price: Suggested donation: $20

VEJI - Purple Haze
The Vancouver Ensemble of Jazz Improvisation
plays Jimi Hendrix
as arranged and recorded by the
 Gil Evans ORCHESTRA

To add yet another sound dimension to his previous celebrations at X-SITE (formerly, El Barrio), this eclectic large group will feature the sounds of JIMI HENDRIX's brilliant compositions that Miles Davis and Gil Evans recognized as the hallmarks of a sound innovator.

Gil arranged several of JIMI's tunes for a recording in N.Y.C. upon his return from England. This would surely be a landmark session as Sketches of Spain was for Miles and Gil years earlier.

Jimi never made it back, but Gil recorded the album in 1974, and it was only recently made available again.

Hugh and his colleges will present transcriptions from the original album plus several new works utilizing the rich textures of the trumpets, flutes, bass clarinet, french horn, tuba, and, of course, the high velocity singing guitar sound that Jimi introduced to the world in his short but yielding life.

Hugh Fraser will lead the band from his vingtage keyboards with Brad Muirhead on bass trombone and tuba Derry Byrnes, Bill Clark and Lorae Farrell on trumpets, Cam Ryga, Bill Runge and Chad Makela on winds, Steve Denroche, french horn, Kerry Galloway on bass, Olaf DeSheild on  guitar and vocal, Don Powrie on drums and Jack  Duncan on percussion.

The translucent arrangements of Canadian born composer and arranger, Gil Evans will offer a rare sound experience that will inspire, energize and mystify the listener while instilling the forward energy of the early '70's that Jimi's compositions captured.

Olaf De Sheild - guitar & vocals
Hugh Fraser - keyboard
Kerry Galloway - bass
Don Powrie - drums
Jack Duncan - percussion
Cam Ryga, Bill Runge & Chad Makela - reeds
Derry Byrne, Bill Clark & Lorae Farrell - trumpets

Although currently known as Pat’s Pub, the pub was originally known as The Patricia Café. Established in 1914 The Patricia Café was run by Will Bowman and was one of Vancouver’s jazz hotspots at the time. Pat’s Pub is thick with jazz history; some of the musicians who played at the Patricia Café at the time were influential in the transition between ragtime and jazz piano styles. Most notably is Ferdinand “Jelly Roll” Morton who at the age of 28 made Vancouver his home during August 1919 thru to January 1921. During his time in Vancouver “Jelly Roll” Morton performed in the Patricia Café as well as roomed in the Patricia Hotel. To this day the Pub’s original wood floor exists as a reminder of its history.

Other notable musicians and entertainers who have performed in the Patricia Café include Aruthur Daniels, Oscar Holden, Ada “Bricktop” Smith, Leo Bailey, Ralph Love, Billy Hoy, and Lillian Rose.

Pat’s Pub is re-establishing its name on the local music scene. It is home to the outstanding Jazz @ The Pat Saturday afternoon sessions as well as Indie-Rock/Pop shows most Friday and Saturday nights, featuring bands from near and afar.

A Tribute to Claude Ranger - 8 pm
235 Alexander Street
Vancouver, BC [map]
Price: $15/20/30

A concert featuring music inspired by drummer Claude Ranger, performed by
Buff Allen, Bernie Arai, Miles Black, Paul Blaney, Bill Clark, Phil Dwyer, Kevin Elaschuk,
Bruce Freedman, Miles Foxx Hill, André Lachance, Bob Murphy, Clyde Reed, Ron Samworth,
Dave Say, Stan Taylor, Brad Turner, Tony Wilson, Dylan van der Schyff and Rene Worst

For these two concerts in tribute to Claude Ranger, we will re-unite the community of players who worked
with the master drummer during his West coast tenure and present a regional celebration of Ranger’s music
and the musicians he touched and inspired.
Ranger is a Canadian jazz legend whose intensity, virtuosity, and creativity rank him among the greats. He
began his career in Montréal in the 1960’s and moved to Toronto in 1972 where he was a fixture on the
scene for fifteen years – accompanying top Canadian and US musicians in the city’s jazz clubs. Claude moved
to Vancouver, living here for a decade or more from about 1987 to early 2000 (at which time he
disappeared). He worked as a sideman, collaborator, mentor and bandleader, inspiring the numerous
musicians he played with and audiences who heard him during his Vancouver tenure.
This is a two-night tribute to this brilliant musician – seven sets of music – a different ensemble per set, by
the alumni of his various projects – the small groups and the larger Jade Orchestra. The musicians who will
be involved constitute the cream of the modern mainstream as well as the avant-garde, representing the
full range of Ranger’s artistry. The programmed material will draw upon some of Claude’s original
compositions, and will also feature original compositions, arrangements and improvisations by the featured
musicians.
This event promises to be a heartfelt and thoughtful acknowledgement of Claude’s unique gift to the world
of music.

Carnegie Jazz Band - 8pm to 10:30 pm
805 East Pender
Vancouver, BC [map]
Price: $2 to $20

The Downtown Eastside’s hot Carnegie Jazz Band joins with the legendary Dal Richards Combo in this evening of great jazz that will have everyone in the Ukrainian Hall a shakin’!
The much honoured Dal Richards, the “King of Swing”, tonight with his seven piece Combo, leads superb musicians in a blend of unique sounds that capture the best of the big band era, along with jazz, rock and pop standards. Now living around the corner from Victory Square, Dal has childhood memories of the neighbourhood. Every Saturday “we shopped at Woodward’s, we had dinner at Woodward’s then we walked down the block to the Pantages Theatre [at Hastings and Carrall]…when those lights came up and the orchestra struck up in the pit, my heart went pitty-pat.” Dal’s visits to the legendary theatre helped inspire him to start his eight-decade career in show business.

Then the Carnegie Jazz Band takes to the stage! Led by the wonderful tutelage of accomplished composer and multi-instrumentalist Brad Muirhead, the Carnegie Jazz Band is comprised of enthusiastic amateur and semi-pro jazz musicians. Last year the band had the honour of performing in a double bill with the Dal Richards Orchestra at Government House in Victoria at the invitation of His Honour, Steven Point, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. Joining the Carnegie Jazz Band for tonight’s concert are two very special guests: Juno award-winning trombonist Hugh Fraser; and proud resident of the Downtown Eastside, vocalist Dalannah Gail Bowen. Cabaret style seating with dance floor, so bring your dancing shoes for this evening of great music! Sliding scale $2 – $20

Price: see venue website

Chucho Valdes has invited Hugh to join him onstage at the Chan Centre.  Hailed as "the Dean of Latin jazz" and "one of the world’s great virtuosic pianists" by the New York Times, multi-Grammy Award-winner Chucho Valdés has recorded over 80 albums. With a long-reaching history in developing Afro-Cuban jazz, he is revered throughout the international jazz community.

Valdés’ inventive style melds his diverse interests: classical, jazz, bop, Cuban and swing, combined with his superb dexterity on the piano. Perhaps best known for founding the influential Latin jazz band Irakere in 1972, Valdés continues to push his own musical boundaries yet remains beautifully consistent in his style.

Born in Havana, Cuba in 1941, he has performed for over 50 years with his own bands and with countless jazz luminaries including Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie and Chick Corea.

Joining Valdés for this performance will be John Benitez, bass; Horacio Hernandez, drums; and Joaquin Nunez Hidalgo, percussion.

PRE-SHOW TALK at 7:15pm in the Royal Bank Cinema inside the Chan Centre by Dr. Sal Ferreras, percussionist, world music specialist and VP Education, Vancouver Community College. Free for ticket holders to this concert.
