VEJI - Purple Haze The Vancouver Ensemble of Jazz Improvisation plays Jimi Hendrix as arranged and recorded by the Gil Evans ORCHESTRA
To add yet another sound dimension to his previous celebrations at X-SITE (formerly, El Barrio), this eclectic large group will feature the sounds of JIMI HENDRIX's brilliant compositions that Miles Davis and Gil Evans recognized as the hallmarks of a sound innovator. Gil arranged several of JIMI's tunes for a recording in N.Y.C. upon his return from England. This would surely be a landmark session as Sketches of Spain was for Miles and Gil years earlier. Jimi never made it back, but Gil recorded the album in 1974, and it was only recently made available again. Hugh and his colleges will present transcriptions from the original album plus several new works utilizing the rich textures of the trumpets, flutes, bass clarinet, french horn, tuba, and, of course, the high velocity singing guitar sound that Jimi introduced to the world in his short but yielding life. Hugh Fraser will lead the band from his vingtage keyboards with Brad Muirhead on bass trombone and tuba Derry Byrnes, Bill Clark and Lorae Farrell on trumpets, Cam Ryga, Bill Runge and Chad Makela on winds, Steve Denroche, french horn, Kerry Galloway on bass, Olaf DeSheild on guitar and vocal, Don Powrie on drums and Jack Duncan on percussion. The translucent arrangements of Canadian born composer and arranger, Gil Evans will offer a rare sound experience that will inspire, energize and mystify the listener while instilling the forward energy of the early '70's that Jimi's compositions captured.
